HOLISTIC PIANO MASTERY MASTERCLASS · MAXWELL CASAZZA

Music as a Path,
Not a Destination

In Eastern traditions, mastery is never the goal — it is the natural consequence of right practice. This coaching integrates the ancient wisdom of Zen, Taoism, and Vedic philosophy with the modern science of somatic learning to create a practice that transforms not just your playing, but your entire relationship with yourself.

Mind & Presence

Before your fingers touch the keys, your mind must find stillness. We cultivate the meditative state that allows music to flow through you rather than from you — dissolving the barrier between player and instrument.

Body & Breath

Tension is the enemy of expression. Through somatic awareness practices drawn from Qi Gong and Feldenkrais, we release the physical patterns that block your natural musicality and invite ease into every movement.

Spirit & Meaning

Music without meaning is mere sound. We explore the philosophical traditions of Taoism, Zen, and Advaita Vedanta to deepen your relationship with music as a vehicle for self-discovery and authentic expression.

Piano keys with cherry blossoms

"The music is not in the notes,
but in the silence between them."

Mindfulness Integration

Every session begins and ends with a contemplative practice, making the piano a vehicle for presence rather than performance.

Somatic Awareness

Qi Gong and Feldenkrais-inspired movement practices dissolve tension and awaken the body's natural musical intelligence.

Eastern Philosophy

Taoism, Zen, and Advaita Vedanta are woven into the musical curriculum as living wisdom, not academic study.

Holistic Wellness

A complete protocol for sleep, nutrition, and nervous system regulation designed specifically for the performing musician.

Deep Listening

Ear training reimagined as a meditative practice — learning to hear not just notes, but the living energy within sound.

Authentic Expression

Moving beyond technical correctness to discover the unique musical voice that only you can offer to the world.

From Struggling Student
to Holistic Pianist
& Educator

Maxwell Casazza didn't set out to become a pianist. Based in Washington, DC, he began as a guitarist — piano was something required of him at university, not a calling he chose. As an average, struggling music student, he admired the great composers who could both compose and improvise freely: Bach, Chopin, Duke Ellington, Claude Debussy. He wanted that freedom, but felt far from it.

Then came the injury. Severe shoulder and back pain from scoliosis — so debilitating he couldn't sit at the piano for more than five minutes without excruciating pain. He had to quit guitar entirely. Forced into stillness, he turned to yoga, acupuncture, and deep reflection. It was in that space of limitation that everything changed.

He began studying with two master teachers: composer Joe Davies, whose lineage traces through Hollywood film composers, and mentor Andy Wasserman, a student of the legendary George Russell — the theorist who shaped the advanced musical thinking of Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Andy taught Maxwell something that would define his entire approach: practice and play are the same process, and enjoyment is the key to getting good.

Maxwell dedicated over 20 years to pursuing mastery — not just in music, but in the disciplines that make music whole. He earned a music degree from UCLA, became a certified 200-hour yoga teacher, a Qi Gong instructor, a Somatic Movement Educator, a Vipassana Meditation Practitioner, and a Black Belt in Isshin-ryū Karate. He went on to compose for major Hollywood films, perform for hundreds in wellness and music spaces, and build a boutique music school generating multiple six figures annually.

Today, Maxwell works with dedicated students, guiding them through the same integration of musical artistry and embodied wisdom that transformed his own life. His mission is clear: to help you achieve complete freedom on your instrument — and develop a wellness practice that serves you for the rest of your life.

"Enjoyment is the key to this process. Enjoyment is the key to getting good."

Max is an incredible music teacher. He has a deep understanding of music, and does a great job at distilling information. This has made learning piano with him much more approachable. Max is very patient and gives you time to figure things out before leading you in the right direction. His calmness and passion are what really make him shine as a teacher. I've seen my understanding and skills improve greatly even after a couple months. I highly recommend taking lessons with Max!

I started lessons with Max in my 40s with very little formal background in music theory, and I've been amazed at how much I've grown. The teaching approach made theory feel accessible and practical instead of intimidating. For the first time, I truly understand how music works. I've even started composing my own songs. If you're an adult learner who thinks it might be 'too late' to start, it's not. Max creates a supportive, encouraging environment that makes real progress possible.

I really enjoyed Max's focus on composition and music theory. As a student, it helped me to approach music from a more wholistic perspective and create my own patterns and structures. This also led to a better understanding of my sheet music and overall musicianship.

I decided to try to learn to read and play music as an adult, which is one of the bravest things I have ever done. I was so lucky to stumble upon Max! I started with guitar for several weeks and then decided to pivot to piano. He created an incredibly welcoming learning space and matched my energy each session. There were days when I wanted to receive more instruction and have him provide more music therapy, and there were days I wanted to be silly and play around and discover. His teaching philosophy is beautiful and unique! Cannot recommend him enough!

Max is an excellent piano teacher. He takes a truly holistic approach in designing his lessons where fundamentals are supported by broader context of how the different components of music fit into the bigger picture. He is patient, encouraging, and makes every lesson feel purposeful. I've made more progress with Max than I ever expected.

I took piano lessons for years as a child, but hadn't played in well over 20 years. After buying a new piano and realizing I needed help, I chose to go with Maxwell. He immediately assessed where I was and built a curriculum that made sense for me. I've been blown away by how quickly I've progressed under his guidance.

Frequently
Asked

If your question isn't answered here, please reach out directly. Every inquiry receives a personal response.

I understand that fear — I've been there myself. There's what I call a Triangle of Trust that needs to be in place for this to succeed: trust in the process, trust that I know what I'm talking about, and trust in yourself to show up consistently. What I've found is that students who hit a roadblock and ask "why isn't this working?" become my greatest success stories. I guarantee that for every step you take forward, I'll take a thousand on your behalf. I wouldn't make an offer if I didn't believe that completely.

That's exactly the right question to ask. Think about the cost of not moving forward — the years of frustration, the plateau you've been stuck on, the music still locked inside you. Wouldn't you agree it's better to invest fully and get everything you need, than to spend less somewhere else and fall short of the result you truly want? This program is priced the way it is because it's designed for people who are serious — and because that's who it works for.

That's actually the best part — this method is not about how much time you have, it's about what you do with the time you do have. In fact, the less time you have, the more this approach is designed for you. Once we get you dialed in on the right foundations, everything else becomes more efficient. This is built to save you time, not consume it.

I hear you, and that's a completely valid concern. In my experience, when a program doesn't work it usually comes down to one of three things: you didn't fully trust the process, you didn't see evidence that others had gotten results, or you didn't trust yourself to stay consistent. Let's talk about which of those feels most true for you — because the real question isn't whether to work with me or anyone else. The real question is whether you're ready to stop staying stuck and start having the musical life you actually want.

Neither is required. I work with students at all levels — from complete beginners to seasoned performers. And students with no background in Eastern philosophy often integrate the material most naturally, because they come without preconceptions. All concepts are introduced gradually and practically. You will never be asked to adopt a belief system — only to explore what works for you.

That makes complete sense — this is a meaningful investment and a thoughtful decision. If you need a conversation with your partner, I respect that fully. What I'd ask you to reflect on is this: are you genuinely in, and just need a sign-off? Or is there something specific holding you back that we should talk through together? I'm here to give you complete clarity, so please bring any question you have to our discovery call.
